    60° Carbide Tool
Carbide tools feature a small insert of extremely hard carbide brazed onto a softer steel shank. They are ideal for machining hard or abrasive materials, as they retain their hardness at temperatures up to approximately 1700°F. This allows for higher cutting speeds and faster feed rates compared to high-speed steel (HSS) tools. Sharpening carbide tools is more challenging, requiring a silicon carbide or diamond grinding wheel. Additionally, the tool geometry is more critical than with HSS cutters. However, their superior performance on tough or abrasive materials makes them a popular choice. If your HSS tools are wearing out quickly, switching to carbide may be the solution.

    Steady Rest
The steady rest has been discontinued as of April 2026. This page will be left up for information purposes only.

All materials tend to deflect away from the cutting tool when you are turning them on a lathe. This tendency is especially noticeable on long, slender parts and long pieces of bar stock, which makes it quite difficult to hold close tolerances. The best way to support a long section is with a center mounted in the tailstock. However, for one reason or another, this is not always possible. As an example, it may be a piece of stock that you want to center drill so that you can mount it between centers, or it may be a part where a center drill hole would ruin the looks of the piece. Whatever the reason, a steady rest provides a means of supporting the piece while it turns.

The Sherline steady rest has three adjustable brass blades mounted in a holder that mounts on the bed of the lathe. These blades can be adjusted to the diameter of the part to provide the necessary support. Another advantage of the steady rest that is often overlooked is the fact that work held in position by the rest turns concentrically with its outside diameter. This means that concentricity is assured when working near the steady rest, because, at that point, it must be running perfectly true despite imperfections in how it is chucked or centered at either end. The Sherline steady rest will accommodate any size part, up to 1.75" (44mm) in diameter.

A steady rest riser block is available, which makes it possible to use the steady rest on the lathe with the headstock and tailstock riser blocks in place.

    Left Hand HSS Tool

Lathe tools—often referred to as tool bits—are the primary cutting tools used for turning and facing operations on a lathe. The most common type is made from high-speed steel (HSS), which is suitable for machining a wide range of materials, including wood, plastic, aluminum, brass, and steel. HSS tool blanks are relatively inexpensive and can maintain their hardness at temperatures up to 1000°F (588°C), making proper control of depth of cut, cutting speed, and feed rate essential.

A major advantage of HSS tools is how easily they can be sharpened. They can be shaped and resharpened using a standard aluminum oxide grinding wheel and, once sharpened, will hold their edge for a long time.

NOTE: A lathe tool is named for the direction the chip exits the tool. A right-hand tool has its cutting edge on the left, causing the chip to peel off to the right.

    Super-Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease 3oz

This grease contains PTFE (Teflon) and serves as a clear, non-toxic, multi-purpose lubricant. Super Lube is an NLGI grade 2, heavy-duty lubricant compatible with most other greases. It provides superior adhesion and outlasts conventional lubricants by 40–100%.

Super Lube is dielectric, water-resistant, non-staining, and classified as a USDA H-1 food-grade lubricant. It performs reliably across a broad temperature range of –45°F to 450°F and will not run, drip, dry out, melt, separate, or form gummy residues.

Recommended applications include leadscrews, behind handwheels where they contact thrust surfaces, dovetails on lathes and mills, as well as gears, hinges, and bearings.

    NIKX-STIKX Metal-Cutting Compound

NIKX-STIKX is a 2.2-ounce solid metal-cutting compound designed to enhance cutting performance. Unlike traditional lubricants, it is a wax-based compound applied directly to cutting tools and saw blades to reduce friction and promote smoother cuts. Its solid form eliminates the mess and spillage associated with liquid coolants.

Ideal for use on drills, end mills, parting tools, and more, NIKX-STIKX helps extend tool life and improve cutting efficiency. It is also a trusted solution used daily in the Sherline manufacturing shop.
