Important Update Regarding Sherline Products

We would like to share an encouraging development regarding the future of Sherline Products.
We are currently in discussions with an American manufacturer regarding the potential purchase of Sherline’s intellectual property and remaining inventory. The goal of this proposed acquisition is to preserve and revitalize the Sherline brand while providing continued availability of replacement parts, accessories, and machines for our valued customers.
As these discussions progress, we have agreed to temporarily suspend accepting new orders, effective October 19, 2026. This will allow us to preserve our remaining inventory while negotiations are underway.
Although no final agreement has been reached, we are hopeful that this opportunity will provide a positive path forward for the Sherline name and the customers who have trusted our products for more than five decades.
We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued loyalty during this transition. We will share additional information as soon as it becomes available.
Our greatest hope is that the Sherline legacy of quality, precision, and American craftsmanship will continue for generations to come.

Product Description

About the Quick-Change 3/8″ Tool Holder

This holder is not included with the P/N 2250 quick-change tool post system but is available as an option for those who wish to take advantage of the superior cutting ability and economy of carbide cutting tools or other tools available in the larger 3/8″ shank size. Sherline offers LH and RH 1/4″ IC tool holders that take 55°, 80°, and groove/threading carbide inserts. This accessory now makes it possible to use those and other tools with the quick-change tool post system.

The P/N 2282 3/8″ holder is not just a 1/4″ holder with a deeper slot to accept 3/8″ tools*. We used a larger billet of material, so you still have plenty of strength to support the larger tool shanks. Which is essential because these 3/8″ tool shanks are usually used to accept carbide inserts, and carbide tools are capable of handling more challenging materials, so plenty of strength in both the toolpost and the holders is needed. This is also why they are made from steel and not aluminum like some aftermarket versions.

*NOTE: This holder will also accept 10 mm tool holders, and there is enough height adjustment to position the cutter on centerline.

    Ceramic Insert Tool Holder

    Designed for cutting hard materials like tool steel, this ceramic insert tool holder features a triangular insert mounted at a negative rake angle. The downward tilt of the insert provides proper side clearance, allowing you to use all six cutting edges—three per side—before needing a replacement. The 3/8" shank fits Sherline’s P/N 7600 tool post (not included). A clamp, hold-down screw, and 3/32" hex key are included for secure installation. Replacement inserts are available as (P/N 22659).

    Why Use Ceramic Inserts?

    Ceramic cutting tools are a powerful addition to the modern machinist’s toolbox. Though more brittle than high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide, ceramic inserts excel at cutting hardened steels and other tough materials, especially at higher spindle speeds. This makes them ideal for jobs that would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible—such as turning down the shank of an end mill.

    This insert’s large nose radius helps achieve an excellent surface finish, particularly when profiling.

    • Each insert offers six usable cutting edges:

      • Rotate 120° to access a new edge (3 per side), then

      • Flip the insert for 3 more cutting points on the opposite face

    • In comparison, traditional carbide inserts offer only 2–4 cutting edges, making ceramic inserts cost-effective over time, despite the higher upfront cost.

    Usage Notes & Safety Information

    • Ceramic inserts are brittle and should be used with proper technique to avoid chipping or breakage.

    • Caution: Chips produced during cutting can be extremely hot—even red-hot. Use protective eyewear, gloves, and fire-safe clothing when operating.

    • Some materials, such as tool steel, may form long, stringy chips that wrap around the part ("bird’s nest" effect).
      Use a chip brush and stop the machine frequently to clear chips. These chip clusters can ignite if they come in contact with hot chips.

    This holder is not included with the Quick-Change Tool Post System (P/N 2250) but is available separately for users who want to take advantage of the enhanced cutting performance offered by carbide tools. The holder includes one 55° carbide insert with two cutting edges, secured by a small screw. A Torx wrench for tightening the screw is also provided.

    Like the Quick-Change Tool Post and other dovetailed holders in the system, this inserted tip holder is made from case-hardened steel with a black oxide finish for durability and corrosion resistance.
