About the 4400-Series Lathe...

4400A/4410A Lathe—The 4400-series lathes are the the best selling machine tool in Sherline's inventory. This deluxe lathe is a favorite of ship modelers, model engineers, prototypers, gunsmiths and anyone who anticipates their micro machining projects may require working on longer parts. Although it sacrifices no accuracy when working on shorter parts it does take up a little more bench space. The lathe has a 3.5" swing over the bed and 17" between centers compared to 8" between centers on our standard 4000-series lathe. The "A" package means it includes a 3.1" 3-jaw chuck for the headstock and a 3/8" drill chuck that can be used in either the headstock or tailstock. Lathes are available in either inch or metric calibrations.

The lathe features a steel bed with ground dovetail ways and laser engraved aluminum handwheels marked in increments of either 0.001" or 0.01 mm. Included with the lathe are a faceplate, drive dog, two dead centers, #0 and #1 Morse chuck arbors plus drawbar, tool post, right-hand HSS cutting tool, hex adjustment keys and two spindle bars (sometimes called "Tommy Bars.") The powerful high-torque 90V DC motor is what makes Sherline tools stand out above the rest in this size category. It can be operated on AC wall current anywhere in the world from 100 VAC to 240 VAC (50 or 60 Hz) without a separate transformer. The DC motor has plenty of power even at low speed, and the electronic speed control means no gear or belt changes are needed to change speed ranges. Just turn a knob to get a continuous speed range from 70 to 2800 RPM. The leadscrew, crosslide screw and tailstock spindle are all handwheel controlled for precision on all axes. There are no exposed rack gears or threads to clog with chips, the precision rolled leadscrews are safely out of the way under the bed and table. Adjustable tapered gibs control side-to-side play of the table and saddle. The headstock features 20 mm lifetime lubricated bearings with adjustable preload to keep end play to 0.0002" or less.

Upgraded features on the 4400-series machines include large "adjustable zero" handwheels that allow you to reset your position to zero at any time to make movement calculations easier. Also included is a rocker tool post in place of the standard lathe's fixed tool post.

About the Free Steam Engine Kit...

Whether you purchase the Christmas Special 4400A lathe above or any Sherline lathe or mill, through December 23rd Sherline will include a steam engine plans and kit for free. The engine, called "Millie" was designed by Ed Warren and plans were originally published in ModelTec magazine. The kit includes Ed's plans plus a materials list and all the brass and steel material you will need to build it. As you can see from the photo at the top of the page, it is a very small engine. In fact you could carry it around in your pocket to show your friends. This type of project points out the advantages of working small in that the finished result is highly portable and material cost is greatly reduced compared to building larger projects.

Building this engine will require both milling and turning operations, so the builder will need a lathe and a mill. As an alternative, it could also be built with a lathe and vertical milling column attachment. The kit comes only with orders directly from Sherline and is not available for separate purchase.
