When someone mentions a really
small nut and bolt, remember this one. It is a mere .011" in diameter with threads .0005" (a half
a thousandth of an inch) deep. The taps and dies were made on Sherline tools by Jerry Kieffer for a
1/30th scale Corliss steam engine. Sitting next to a scale wrench made on
the Sherline mill, this tiny hex nut and bolt is dwarfed by a quarter. Compare it
also to the
heads of some of the smallest screws commonly found which are used
in the mechanism of the ladies wristwatch at the right.
(NOTE: This was one of Jerry's early
attempts at small fasteners. He now
makes them .009" in diameter.)
