Downloading .pdf Files

When Adobe Acrobat® works properly, Sherline instruction and price list files should download quickly and look exactly like the printed literature. Printing them for reference will yield better quality illustrations and take less paper. However, sometimes problems can occur that make files look wrong. Here's what to do:

PRICE LISTS WITH JUMBLED TYPE...If you try to download our price lists and the type is missing or unreadable, the problem is most likely that you have an older version of Acrobat Reader. To get the type to display properly you will need at least version 4.05. If you have an older version, get the latest one free from Adobe by clicking on the icon below.

BLANK PAGES OR PAGES MISSING IMAGES AND TYPE...For a time in December 2000 and early January 2001, we were experiencing problems with .pdf pages coming up blank or some parts of the document not loading completely. We contacted our Internet Service Provider and they modified our server to include "byteserving", which has solved the problem. If you try to download a file that previously downloaded improperly and it still doesn't work, use the "refresh" button on your browser. Your computer may be loading the old, corrupted file from a cache rather than getting the new one.

OTHER DOWNLOAD PROBLEMS...If your browser is set up to open Acrobat Reader within the browser window, sometimes problem files that won't load can be opened in another fashion. Instead of opening them in the browser window, try opening them in a separate window or saving them to disk and then opening them later. Insufficient system memory can be one cause for this problem. Also, Explorer can "time out" while downloading a large file or when the Internet is very busy. This will cause a blank screen  or unfinished file and can lock up your computer. If reloading the file doesn't work, the solution below can sometimes avoid those problems:

Windows versions of Acrobat:

· Right click on the .pdf filename and choose "Save Target As". Save the file to your hard drive and then click on it to open Acrobat and view it outside of Netscape or Explorer.

· Another way to do this is to open Acrobat and then look in the menu bar under FILE--PREFERENCES--GENERAL. There is a box that says "Web Browser Integration". Deselect this box (remove the check mark) and close the window. Now, when you click on a .pdf file, you will be asked if you want to open it in a separate window or save it to your disk. Either option should open the file properly. If you need more details on this operation, see Adobe's help site. (CLICK HERE.)

Mac versions of Acrobat:
