In our own shop here at Sherline Products Inc. there are often times when we need to know the weight of a heavy object. The scales we looked at were mostly meant for sale of items by weight and were both accurate and expensive. We didn't need that level of accuracy for purposes of loading trucks and trailers for safe operation, so we designed our own. We applied the same principles used in the original Sherline trailer tongue weight scale and adapted them to a scale that can weigh suspended objects. It is much easier to measure the weight of a machine or large bundle of material by picking it up than it is by trying to set it on a scale. The Sherline suspended hydraulic scale uses a large, easy to read, 4" diameter gauge that is accurate to within 2% at midrange and 3% at the extremes. It is offered with either a 2050 or 5000 lb. capacity gauge. The body is machined from solid bar stock aluminum with a steel piston, pins and forged steel hooks with safety clips. The body has a tough black anodized finish while the piston has a black oxide finish. The scale measures less than 14" long and can be hung from a block and tackle or forklift blade to lift objects weighing up to 5000 pounds (2250 kg). The scale itself weighs less than 7 pounds and is easy to handle. The piston is measuring pressure in pounds per square inch or PSI. Because the scale uses a piston with exactly one square inch of surface area, the pressure reading in PSI is the same as pounds on the gage. Older gages actually said "PSI" on the face, but to eliminate confusion, gages installed after 5/02 say "pounds." This simple hydraulic principle makes it possible to provide a durable, easy to maintain scale with few moving parts and no electronics that is also very reasonably priced. |

The Sherline Suspended Scale is shown in use at our plant to weigh an incoming bundle of raw material. The manifest said it weighed 2250 pounds, and the scale reading confirmed we were getting all the material we were paying for. |

As you can see, the uses for a scale like this are many and varied. Keep in mind that it is an "estimating scale" and is accurate to within 2 or 3 percent. It is not intended for use where material is sold by weight. This level of accuracy is more than sufficient for most shop and field uses. The sturdy construction, economical price and compact size should make the Sherline suspended scale ideal for tasks in your shop too.

NOTICE OF NAME CHANGE!
When first introduced, Sherline scales were marketed under the name of Load-Master. It was brought to our attention in 1999 or 2000 that a company in Ohio has been using the Load-Master name on a line of commercial truck scales for many years and had registered the trademark in Ohio. We do not wish to cause any confusion with their line of scales and have therefore changed the brand name of our product to our corporate name. Some early catalog references or older printed material may still be floating around out there that refers to them by the Load-Master name. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused, but our scales are now officially sold only as Sherline Hydraulic Scales, although we do still retain the original "LM" part numbers.![]()
